An interesting start to our service learning...

Here you are Dad, an entry from me!

Last night, we were all alerted by the distant sounds of Raffy screaming "SNAKE!", but turns out it was actually just a lizard that had crawled into their ceiling. There were a few other issues before that but I'll spare you the details- lets just say rats:1 expedition team:0. We went to breakfast which consisted of perfectly fried eggs on toast or jam for those that wanted it. Jess announced that we would be taking it easy today because we were all very seepy much to everyone's surprise as we though it would be a pretty full on day. Howard explained our options for our service learning and we chose painting a mural and building chairs for the preschool and younger school.

We walked up to the local school and hostels for the children at the school and Howard met us there- he was cheerful because he drove in an air conditioned car and we turned up very sweaty as we had to walk! It was really lovely seeing the impact Howard has made on the community and waving at the children staring at us and grinning as we walked past. We had to walk back and ate lunch where we were staying.

After lunch, we made our way back to the school after we had sketched out our designs we wished to paint for the mural and finished that swiftly so we FINALLY got to go to the 'nearby' beach, which was actually quite a walk away, and we were so excited when we arrive to finally get to be near a beach. However, Jess said we weren't allowed to swim, just wade and sit in a shallow area, and play games. The beach was so beautiful and the water was pretty much clear and light grey blue with soft sand on the seabed which is a treat in comparison to the rocky beaches in the UK! We were all so sad to leave but promised to go back there tomorrow after our hard work painting and building. We did however have to walk back in our sandy and water soaked clothes and lets just say we all had sand in places it shouldn't be. One of Howard's dogs, Lucy, surprisingly stayed with us for the entire time almost as if she was keeping us safe when walking to the beach and back from the beach which was 30 minutes away from our accommodation!

After we got back, we all felt so gross as there was barely any time to shower before dinner which was Malaysian chicken curry- yes another curry to power us through our work tomorrow. In total we walked 10k- good training for trek which I'm sure everyone is dreading.

Mimpi indah !!

That beach looks idyllic! And not another soul in sight - certainly an unfamiliar scene in Europe! Sounds like another memorable action packed day with a swim in that dreamy sea being the icing on the cake (minus the sand in nether regions of course). I love the look of contemplation on Rosie’s face as she plans her masterpiece. I can only imagine Raffy has opted for building chairs. The thought of painting a mural is probably almost as stressful as writing a blog, although I’m sure he could produce something wonderful. Let your creative juices flow and I look forward to seeing the final designs! Xxx

Love all the updates. Please post picture of finished mural. Freya is on it regarding Bruno Mars outfit request and you have a ticket to see Newcastle at St James’ Park waiting for when you get back. Also I would like to congratulate Lottie Pallie for a perfect streak week!

You can keep the lizards and the rats but Lucy sounds an absolute gem! The service learning sounds like you have made a great choice, I’m sure the mural will be fantastic with you all being so talented! Hopefully no more reptile intruders tonight!! Xx

Wow sounds like youve all been very busy. I love that Lucy the dog has been looking after you and keeping you safe. Glad that it was a lizard and not a snake but well done Raffy for being so brave and alerting your fellow team mates! The beach and sea must have been very welcome after all that walking - even if you were only allowed a little paddle! Better than nothing! Would love to see a picture of the finished mural! Keep up the good work Team 1! PS - salt water very good for healing bug bites - lets the waves splash you! Lots of love xxxx

Thank you for the update Betty! And to everyone else you’re giving us excellent updates which fill our hearts up knowing you’re all having the adventure we hoped you would. Looking forwards to seeing how the mural and the chairs turn out and lovely to hear the locals were happy to see you. The beach looks lovely so hopefully you get to go back and it’s safe to swim this time 🤞🏻. Crete is hot but very windy which is maybe what it’s like there with all that curry? Just off to get ready for dinner, love you Bets and Vi and hugs all round for the rest of Team 1 (once you’ve had a wash!) xx
