Day 9- caught in a trap
14/07
Day 9 started with our first wake up in the jungle with some sleeping in tents while others slept in only mosquito nets! After a relaxed rice and noodles breakfast, we set off on our morning with Ronnie, Rickie and Sabheer. First we learned how to make jungle calls with ginger leaves then we saw an array of traps, some friendly and some... not so friendly. We drank straight from a bamboo tree with a bamboo straw, closely followed by swinging from vines, more like falling from vines for Mr Boughton (he's no Tarzan). The rice and noodles are clearly taking their toll! Ronnie then made an impressive cup out of bamboo, of which he made Rickie make one for each of us during lunch time. We were all very excited to have our own jungle souvenir.
We went to check our traps, where we found we had caught an abundance of leaves alongside 2 frogs and a crab. We expected them to be returned to the river but ended up swiftly toasting them on the bonfire. Felt like an original experience but on the whole enjoyed by all who tried. Had the texture of a fish while tasting like chicken.
Next in our jungle survival training was learning how to make aspects of traditional houses. No shelter, no wife- Ronnie's DIY dilemas. First we made bamboo floor, with everyone getting involved. Next on the agenda was plaiting leaves to create walls, all with varying success. Mrs Leighton's team was an obvious winner, closely followed by Anna Tiffney's. Lord Louis' team 'accidently' mixed their wall up with Ronnie's- what a shame!
We then played lots of games around the campfire. While Lord Louis has many talents, simplicity of Mrs Leightons clapping game was too much for him as well as Mr Boughton who was too focused on putting others off the game to play well.
The evening was finished with campfire songs for most while some went for a second night time jungle walk. The adventurers of the night were Jo, Ffion, Ollie, Harry, Ben and of course the dynamic duo of Mr Boughton and Lord Louis. We saw every species of frog in the world (at least it felt like it) and a glow in the dark fungi. Ollie vlogged the whole thing, expect it on YouTube on our return! We also saw a few scary millipede things which our guide pointedly told us not to pick up after our adventure with the stick insect yesterday!
Here's some stats from our night walk to round off the blog.
LEECH COUNT:
Ollie: 9
Ben: 7 leeches including 5 bites
Harry: 8 leeches
Ffion: 6 leeches
Jo: 4 leeches and 2 were off Ffion
thats all bye bye everyone
lots of love fifi and jojo xoxoxo

You all seem to be having an amazing time, keep going, you're nearly there now :)
Great skills guys! - Dad would like a new leaf wall in the garden please! We would like a picture of the leeches please - as they are becoming a common feature of these blogs!! Have the vegetarians recovered from the frog roasting?
What an excellent blog! I’m wondering how I can put these new found skills to use when you get home but worried you might trap me and roast me for dinner! Bravo to Mr Boughton……..
Wow, what a busy time at survival camp, love all the crafts, skills and experiences (including frog eating!). Hope you've removed the 6 leeches Ffion, and the stick insect!
What a lovely leech count Harry! Please don’t bring any home as a souvenir! I’d prefer a fridge magnet! On the other hand I would like you to bring home all your fingers - that machete looks huge and terrifying from a mother’s point of view! Hope you’re having the best time and can’t wait to hear all about it xx
Very impressed with your wall and floor creations and your night adventure. Looking forward to seeing the bamboo cups made by Ronnie too.
What an amazing experience it sounds like you all having!! Enjoy every second of your adventure... I am very jealous
